Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Design Manager with an electrical or mechanical engineering background to oversee the design and development of data centre projects. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of electrical or mechanical systems within data centre environments, managing the design process from conceptualization to completion. This role is integral to ensuring that the design meets the highest standards of efficiency, reliability, and compliance with relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading and managing the design process for electrical and mechanical systems of data centre projects, ensuring that all aspects of the design align with client requirements, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including CSA, MEP, IT, and construction teams, to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical systems within the data centre.
  • Overseeing the design and coordination of power distribution, HVAC, fire protection, and other critical mechanical and electrical systems specific to data centre operations.
  • Reviewing and approving design deliverables, including detailed drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Ensuring the design meets the performance, reliability, and energy efficiency goals set by the project client.
  • Conducting regular design reviews, and providing technical guidance and leadership to the design team to maintain project timelines and quality standards.
  • Ensuring the design complies with local and international codes, standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance in addressing design issues, troubleshooting complex problems, and proposing innovative solutions.
  • Managing communication with stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and internal teams, ensuring alignment on project goals and expectations.
  • Tracking design progress, managing project milestones, and ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Coordinating with procurement teams to ensure that the necessary equipment and materials for the project are specified and available.
  • Reviewing and approving vendor designs and managing the integration of third-party systems or solutions into the overall design.
  • Mentoring and supporting the development of junior engineers and design staff within the team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the design and management of electrical or mechanical systems for large-scale infrastructure projects, with a focus on data centres or mission-critical facilities.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems used in data centre environments, including power distribution, cooling, fire suppression, and backup systems.
  • Experience in managing complex projects from initial concept through to final design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for data centre design, including electrical codes (NEC, IEC, etc.) and mechanical systems standards (ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient and sustainable design practices and technologies for data centres.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD, Revit, and other design software tools.
  • Excellent project management skills, with experience overseeing the design and delivery of large-scale projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to guide, mentor, and develop design teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to interact effectively with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and ensure quality control throughout the design phase.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the data centre industry or with tech-focused clients.
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes and tools.
  • Project management certification (PMP, Prince2) or similar.
  • Familiarity with energy modelling and simulation tools for mechanical or electrical systems.
